In Their Own Words: What Our Girls Built This Summer

Every Oct. 11, the world marks International Day of the Girl, a day to celebrate girls and listen to what they have to say. At Black Girls Code, listening is how we build every program, so today we're turning this page over to a few of the girls who spent their summer building with us in cities across the nation.
Walking in curious
Most of our builders start the same way: with a question. A new place and a room full of new faces can take a minute, and by the end of the week the room was hers.

“When I heard about Black Girls Code, I wanted to join just to see what it was about.”
Morgan, 12
“It was sad at first, but I grew. I made a lot of friends.”
Morgan, 12
Building something real
By midweek, the questions had turned into projects.

“This week, we were working on a comic book and a new game.”
Rayne, 13

“If you play Roblox, you would like coding, because coding is like a game. It's just a different form of a game.”
Zeriah, 12
Showing the work
Every camp ends with a showcase, where girls walk families through what they made and how they made it.

“What I'm most excited about is getting to share my process with all the parents.”
Amina, 12
Already planning the next build

“I want to build and program a big robot.”
Gabby, 9
“Girls can do anything they want to.”
Morgan, 12
One summer, part of something bigger
These girls are part of more than 53,000 learners who have built with Black Girls Code since 2011, through free Code Along episodes on YouTube, hands-on workshops, summer camps in 10 cities, and a College and Careers community for young women 18 and up.
Through Dec. 31, our Support our Girls campaign keeps all of it going, so the girl who wants to build a big robot gets the chance to do it.
