3 Ways to #GetCyberSmart This October

Hey BGC fam!

October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Black Girls Code is excited to be working alongside over a dozen organizations, as part of the Cyber Education Alliance, to keep our kids cyber-safe in today’s digital world.

Cybersecurity might not be the funniest topic to discuss, but with the rise of AI, it’s one of those important conversations every family must have to ensure young people can explore technology with confidence. Studies have shown that many important cybersecurity topics are rarely, if ever, taught in schools. But our kids are scrolling, gaming, and using AI tools in digital spaces that are full of both opportunities and threats. That’s why awareness starts at home.

Here are 3 Cyber-Smart Tips Every Family Should Know:

1. Protect your info like it’s your superpower.

Think before you share, whether you’re posting, chatting, or gaming online. Don’t drop personal or confidential details you wouldn’t tell a stranger. If you wouldn’t post it publicly, don’t share it online. And remember: some AI tools store and use the sensitive data you input.

2. Lock it down like a pro.

Strong passwords are your digital armor. Use Multi-Factor Authentications (MFA), update your software, and keep an eye out for phishing attempts & report them. Cybercriminals are getting smarter with AI, but so are you.

3. Use AI as your sidekick, not your substitute.

AI can boost your creativity and make learning fun, but your ideas are your real power and strength. Let AI help you think bigger and enhance your work. Don’t let it take the wheel. Prompting isn’t the same as creating.
