Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Ciara has been creating chart-topping music since her debut album at 19. She's challenging you to build a beat and kickstart your own music career. Check out Ciara’s announcement video to learn more.

What is the "Build a Beat" Challenge?

Black Girls Code and GoldieBlox invite all youth ages 13-18 to code a song for a chance to meet superstar, Ciara, and win cool tech prizes.

All participants will start the Challenge with access to the five “Code A Song” tutorial videos created by Black Girls Code that will teach you how to make music using the Python programming language. You’ll also have a “cheat sheet” to guide you step-by-step through the process.

The top 10 finalists’ songs will be sent to our celebrity judges, who will choose the winners of this year’s prizes based on: effort and originality, code complexity, and code clarity.

Ciara

Ciara is a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter, producer, model, actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. She is the founder and CEO of Beauty Marks Entertainment, a production company with a business model built on fully supporting the artist. She is also co-founder of The House of LR&C, a fashion brand focused on sustainability and impact. These businesses are vehicles for Ciara to bring together her deep passions for music, film, fashion, technology, and community engagement.

Craig King

Craig King (Co-Founder of Rappluglive.com alongside rapper/entrepreneur Rick Ross and Branden Criss) attended Howard University where he majored in jazz and classical piano. During his sophomore year he was recruited to perform with Ray Charles for "The Black Requiem Tour" conducted by Quincy Jones. From there King went on to work on many Grammy award winning albums, soundtracks, television shows, commercials, tours and award ceremonies (Jazzy Jeff & Will Smith, Ludacris, Kanye West, Aaliyah etc.).

MC Lyte

A legend in the world of music and entertainment, MC Lyte is a pioneering artist and a formidable actress of television and film. Her ground breaking music career spans 30 years. She was the first female rapper ever to be nominated for a Grammy Award, the first rap artist to perform at Carnegie Hall, and the first female artist to earn a gold single. MC Lyte has also performed at the Kennedy Center Honors and the White House for President Barack Obama. Her charity, "Hip Hop Sisters Foundation", has presented over $1,000,000 in scholarships.

BOSKO KANTE

Bosko Kante is a producer, inventor, and mechanical engineer who wrote and performed talkbox on Grammy Winning Albums by Dua Lipa and Kanye West. He invented the ElectroSpit talkbox used by David Guetta and Stevie Wonder, produced over forty songs for E40, and helps musicians create their own businesses that don’t depend on gigs and streaming at the nonprofit Black music incubator called "HiiiWAV" he founded in Oakland, California.

JAMES CUTHBERT

James is an award-winning business executive, and community advocate with over 20 years of experience, including five global companies (BET, Red Bull North America, The Coca-Cola Company, Kellogg's, and General Mills), two non-profit organizations (KIPP Philadelphia Charter Schools and The Center for Youth Services), and currently the President of LL COOL J's Rock The Bells. In 2022 & 2023, he was named a "Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Power Player".

THE BOYKINZ

The BoykinZ, a sister quartet from the suburbs of Atlanta, have taken the social media world by storm with their unique blend of country, pop, rock, hip hop, and soul. Acclaimed songwriters and influencers, they've amassed over 67 million views on TikTok and have been featured by Entertainment Tonight, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and CMT. Their debut single, "Girl's Night", is available on all streaming platforms. The BoykinZ represent a bright, bold, and fresh voice in the world of country music.

HOW TO ENTER

1. Learn how to code a song by watching the free tutorial videos on the Infosys Foundation USA Pathfinders Online Institute. Heads up: you must create an account to be eligible to win.

2. Code your Song on EarSketch using beats from Ciara, The BoykinZ, and more! Use the judging criteria to help you create a winning song.
